Dr. Mark R. Wakefield is the Associate Chief Medical Officer for the University of Missouri Health Care (MUHC). Appointed in March 2017, he is responsible for coordinating ambulatory clinic initiatives, stewarding quality and safety for surgical services, and assisting in physician engagement and development. He is the Chief of the Division of Urology and program director for the urology residency. Dr. Wakefield joined the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Medicine in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery in September 2004. He also has a urologic oncology practice at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and is the director of the renal transplant program at MUHC and has been active in multiple transplant organizations.

With a wide range of interests, Dr. Wakefield has collaborated in multi-institutional research assessing methods to improve medication adherence in renal transplant patients. He has also participated in research projects related to renal transplantation, brachytherapy for prostate cancer, and clinical urology of all aspects. In addition to clinical trials for urologic oncology, Dr. Wakefield has collaborated on investigating immunologic pathways for several malignancies.

Dr. Wakefield served in the United States Air Force. He completed his urologic residency at University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia and attended medical school at the University of Missouri, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1994.
