TIPS FOR MEASURING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE AT HOME:

It’s not uncommon to get incorrect home readings because the individual using the device is not following good blood pressure measuring procedure.

1- BEST TIME: Take readings at approximately the same time each day and in a quiet place. A person’s blood pressure can often fluctuate within a day for a variety of reasons including activity, food and drink, adrenal issues, or because of medical conditions such as diabetes, pregnancy, dehydration, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, thyroid or nervous system problems. It is important to take your blood pressure on a regular basis and review the overall trend of your readings with your doctor.

2- PREPARE: Avoid eating, drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages, smoking, exercising or bathing for 30 minutes prior to taking a measurement.

3- MOVE CLOTHING: It’s best to take a reading on bare skin. Pull up long sleeves.

4- TIGHTEN THE CUFF W/ THE DISPLAY ON THE INSIDE OF YOUR WRIST: Wrap the cuff around your wrist, attaching it to itself with the hook-and-loop fastener. You should only be able to get a single finger underneath the cuff. The display needs to be on your inner wrist, as your pulse is strongest there.

5- REST WRIST AT HEART LEVEL: For an accurate reading, place your arm on a pillow or similar. The monitor should be even with your heart for the best reading.

6- PRESS START: Do not move while cuff inflates and deflates.

7- AVERAGE: Take two or three readings approximately a minute apart to get an average and record your readings with our time/date stamp function.

8- HOME SETTING: It is recommend that anyone with high blood pressure monitor his or her blood pressure at home. Home monitoring can help you keep tabs on your blood pressure in a familiar setting, make certain your medication is working, and alert you and your doctor to potential health complications. Other people have normal blood pressure at a clinic but elevated pressure elsewhere (masked hypertension), or elevated pressure in a clinical setting (hypertension) also known as “White Coat Syndrome”. Monitoring blood pressure at home can help determine if you have true high blood pressure.
